The international UN-developed EDI standard used predominantly in Europe, Asia, and parts of Australia/New Zealand.
In practice
EDIFACT messages are organised into subsets - D.96A, D.01B, D.07B, D.16A - that lock in particular field definitions. Common transactions include ORDERS, ORDRSP, DESADV, and INVOIC.
Why it matters
European trading partners often require EDIFACT specifically; X12 will not work.
