VAN

Value-Added Network - the legacy private networks (e.g. SPS Commerce, OpenText GXS, IBM Sterling) that route EDI traffic between trading partners.

In practice

VANs charge per kilocharacter of traffic and provide guaranteed delivery, audit, and partner directory services.

Why it matters

Some long-tail partners are only reachable via VAN. Bridging in and out of a VAN is sometimes the only viable connection.
